December’s birthstone is tanzanite.
Tanzanite is 1,000 times rarer than diamonds, yet lower in price.
Tanzanite mines were only discovered in 1967 in Tanzania. According to Masai legend, herders discovered the stones when lightning struck their fields and set them ablaze.
Tanzanite obtains its deep blue color from trace amounts of vanadium.
