PURE AND PRECIOUS
The color of Peridot bears a resemblance to pure olive oil, with its strong green and yellow tones. The Perdot’s relationship to Asher is that the land owned by the tribe in ancient Israel featured a wealth of olive oil. According to Biblical folklore, it was Serach, the daughter of Asher (Jacob’s 10th son), who gently broke the news to Jacob that his long-lost son Joseph was still alive through music, so not to startle him. This sign of intellectual maturity is a credited to her great upbringing by her father, Asher.
The significance of olive oil is very important in the Bible, as King Solomon taught in Ecclesiastes 7:1, “A good name is better than precious oil.” That is to say, that olive oil is pure, it always separates itself and rises to the top. So too, a good name (like Asher’s) remains above—in other words, among us—even after leaving the physical world. The Peridot was a powerful symbol on the Priestly Breastplate, as it captured the essence of Asher.
