THE POWER OF UNITY
Benjamin was the youngest of Jacob’s sons, and Joseph’s only brother from his mother Rachel. Although the texts indicate that Jacob showed the same favoritism to Benjamin that he did towards Joseph, their 10 half-brothers did not feel any jealousy towards Benjamin. They had felt remorse for their mistreatment of Joseph, and risked their lives for Benjamin in order not to see their father suffer again. Benjamin’s stone on the Priestly Breastplate was the Opal, as its mixture of colors symbolized his ability to bring unity and peace between his brothers. His tribe is symbolized by the Wolf, as wolves travel in unison to form a wolfpack.
When Benjamin’s life was on the line, Judah was willing to give his life to protect him. This connects directly to the traditionally held view that Opal promotes blood flow and protects against blood clots—as blood is the lifeforce, exhibiting the power of regeneration. Generations later, Jonathan—a descendant of Benjamin and heir apparent to King Saul’s throne—returned the favor by lovingly placing his royal garb on David—a descendant of Judah. This act of love and humility is a shining example of the greatness of Benjamin and the Opal stone.
