THE STONE COURAGE
Gad, the 9th son of Jacob, was renowned for his warrior mentality, his strategic military skills, and his aptitude on the battlefield. The Tribe of Gad were represented on the Priestly Breastplate by the Amethyst, a stone that encouraged bravery in battle or war. This belief was also commonplace among the ancient Egyptians, who wore Amethysts as a protective measure when their lives were in danger.
The Tribe of Gad was thirsty for conquests, as Hebrew tradition describes their desire for the land of Israel before they even arrived, as follows: “From the house of] Gad will be an assailing [armed] troop[s will pass over the Jordan before their brothers to war]; he will be a troop at their heels [and they will return to their land with much property]” (Onkelos on Genesis 49:19). The Agate is a source of comfort and strength in critical moments, and Gad embodied that spirit.
