Tribe of Joseph
Shoham is the Hebrew word for Onyx. When its letters are rearranged it can be read as Hashem, a reference to the Ineffable Name of G-d, as Joseph was guided and protected by Him throughout his difficult life. Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob (from his favorite wife Rachel), drawing the ire of his jealous brothers, as they secretly sold him into slavery and concocted a story about how he was devoured by a wild animal. Nevertheless, Joseph maintained his strong faith and positivity, becoming the highest-ranking servant in the Egyptian House of Potiphar. Then he was falsely accused of an immoral act and thrown into prison, where he honed his abilities as a dream interpreter. This led to his reputation growing, and when Pharaoh summoned him to explain the meaning of his dreams, Joseph delivered an astonishing plan to save Egypt from impending economic disaster.

Finally, against all odds, he was anointed Viceroy of Egypt and eventually made peace with his brothers, who proved they had changed for the good after passing a series of tests conducted by Joseph. The Onyx is appropriately worn as a protection stone during periods of emotional turmoil, something that Joseph was very familiar with. On the Priestly Breastplate, the Onyx represented Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph, since they earned honorary tribal status as the first brothers in the Bible to choose unconditional love over jealousy. The Onyx symbolizes a forgiving heart, a love for family.
