A SHINING COUNTENANCE
Although Judah was the 4th son of Jacob, he personified leadership by accepting responsibility for his actions, eventually earning Firstborn status and his tribe achieved the ultimate honor of being the bloodline of the Messiah. The Priestly Breastplate featured a Garnet for Judah, as Jewish tradition teaches that his complexion changed to a tint of this color when his father held him responsible for the apparent death of his brother Joseph and when he publicly confessed to his crime with Tamar, but then shined radiantly when Jacob later commended him for saving Joseph’s life.
Biblical folklore holds the power of the Tribe of Judah’s stone in high esteem, as it has the power of making its owner victorious in battle, a fitting stone for the tribe from which springs the Israelite dynasty of kings that successfully routed its enemies. Its connection to the Messianic Throne gives the Garnet the unique distinction of being the symbol of redemption. The Book of Isaiah, a prophetic work rich with Messianic allusion, states: “I will lay carbuncles as your building stones and make your foundations of sapphires” (54:11).
