Tribe of Reuben THE ULTIMATE VIRTUE
The Reuben tribe is represented by Ruby which was symbolized on the Priestly Breastplate. The red stone was chosen due to Reuben's feeling of shame when acknowledging his transgression of moving his mother Leah’s bed into his father Jacob’s tent. This act ultimately caused him to lose his Firstborn status. Seemingly, the stone would appear to have a negative connotation, however it’s actually positive, as it serves as a reminder to compel one to repent fully like Reuben. Therefore, a Ruby representing the tribe of Reuben is celebrated as a badge of honor, as it was still the 1st stone on the Breastplate, a constant reminder of that all humans have the ability to change for the good.
Ruby has continued to be used as a powerful source of protection, as its customary for pregnant women to wear a red stone through childbirth. As such, it is believed to promote arousal, help fertility, and prevent miscarriage. This indicates that rubies have an extremely important status in the Biblical tradition, as they are linked to G-d’s first commandment to humankind: “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28).
