A MORAL COMPASS
As the 2nd son of Jacob, Simeon was intense and zealous, sometimes to a fault. He famously took vengeance on the King of Shechem and his city for violating his sister Dina, which upset his father Jacob, a reputable man of peace. However, the Emerald was selected as the Tribe of Simeon’s representative jewel on the Priestly Breastplate, as it stood for protection against immorality. Considering his volatile past, the honor is still bestowed upon Simeon to be a beacon of ethics and restraint.
The Emerald is mentioned in Exodus, Ezekiel, and in the Book of Revelation. Although none of these verses expound on the stone’s significance or power, all instances point to the reverence of its beauty. In one of the most cryptic and mystical sections of the Bible, Ezekiel describes his prophetic vision of the Divine in great detail, in arguably the most well-known references to Emeralds: “The appearance of the wheels and their work was like the color of an emerald: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel” (1:16).
