Smoky Quartz is often most associated with the ancient Druids of Briton, ancient Celtic people who believed that the stone could guide souls into the afterlife. The stone is also known as Cairngorm Quartz, named after the Scottish mountain range in which it is found. In later times, it was used extensively in Scottish Highland culture to decorate pins and ceremonial knives. During the Victorian era, it became quite popular for gem lovers to search the Cairngorm area for these stones. It receives its smoky color from natural radiation and traces of aluminum that are contained within its center.
Smoky Quartz is believed to be useful in relieving stress and warding off panic attacks. It is also deemed helpful in preventing theft and damage caused by human error, and when used in groups is said to encourage cooperation and make clear any miscommunication between group members. Additionally, it is said to strengthen one’s back, relieve back pain, cramps, and ease muscle spasms. The stone comes in a variety of colors that ranges from pale to smoky gray, dark brown, and black.
